Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water During Fasting: During these nine days of Chaitra Navratri, devotees observe a fast alongside their worship of Goddess Durga. During a fast, the body requires energy and nutrition, yet one must refrain from consuming heavy meals. In this context, lemon water emerges as an easy-to-prepare, natural, and wholesome option that not only quenches thirst during a fast but also offers numerous health benefits.

The Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) under the Government of India also recognizes this home remedy as highly beneficial. Drinking a glass of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon on an empty stomach in the morning proves to be a boon for the body. Lemons are rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and citric acid—nutrients that play a pivotal role in strengthening immunity. While there is a risk of physical weakness during fasting days, regular consumption of lemon water helps protect against colds, fatigue, and infections.
Fasting often brings with it issues such as bloating, gas, indigestion, and constipation. However, warm lemon water keeps the digestive system active, reduces acidity, and helps cleanse the intestines. This facilitates a smoother fasting experience and leaves the body feeling light. Additionally, it aids in detoxifying the liver. During a fast, accumulated toxins are flushed out of the body, thereby keeping the liver healthy and maintaining energy levels. Lemon water is also instrumental in weight management. Despite abstaining from sugary and fried foods during a fast, many people still experience weight gain.
Warm lemon water boosts metabolism, assists in burning fat, and helps regulate appetite. Continuing to consume it even after the fasting period helps maintain a balanced weight. It also serves as a panacea for the skin. Reduced water intake during a fast can often lead to dry skin; however, the Vitamin C and antioxidants present in lemons help reduce acne and blemishes, leaving the face with a radiant glow. Regular consumption ensures that the skin looks youthful and healthy.

Preparing lemon water is also quite simple: simply squeeze half a lemon into a glass of warm water. You may add a little honey for taste, but strictly avoid adding sugar. Do not use very hot water; use only lukewarm water. During a fast, you can consume it along with your fruit-based meals, or drink it 2–3 times throughout the day.
