In Hinduism, both lunar and solar eclipses are considered inauspicious. We all know that performing any kind of auspicious activity is prohibited during this time; however, there are other actions—normally considered routine in daily life—that are best avoided during an eclipse. Many people wonder: can women apply makeup or adorn themselves during an eclipse?

Two eclipses are set to occur in August 2026. The first, a solar eclipse, took place on August 12. Now, the second and final lunar eclipse of the year is scheduled for August 28, 2026. Various rules are observed during an eclipse period. So, how appropriate is it—according to scriptures—to apply makeup or adorn oneself? Let us find out.
Is applying makeup during an eclipse right or wrong?
According to religious beliefs, women should refrain from applying makeup or cutting their hair and nails during an eclipse. This is because the period is considered to be under the influence of negative energy.
Another reason is that, in Hinduism, adornment (*shringar*) is regarded as a symbol of auspiciousness and purity. For married women, in particular, items associated with adornment are seen as symbols of their marital bliss and good fortune.
According to Hindu traditions and beliefs, wearing items associated with marital status (*suhag*) during an eclipse can invite negative energy into one's married life. Therefore, both married and unmarried women are advised to avoid applying makeup or dressing up during the eclipse period.
When is the lunar eclipse?
The final lunar eclipse of the year is set to occur on August 28. However, it will not be visible in India. This is because it will be daytime in India, and the moon will remain below the horizon, making it impossible to view the moon from any part of the country.
This day also marks the conclusion of the month of Shravan. Additionally, the *Sutak* period (the inauspicious time preceding an eclipse) will not be applicable. Notably, the festival of Raksha Bandhan will also be celebrated in India on this day.
Where will the year's last lunar eclipse be visible? The lunar eclipse of 2026 will be visible from Europe, North and South America, and parts of Africa.
