Mahashivratri Rudrabhishek Rituals: The auspicious festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi (14th day) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Phalguna month. This day is considered extremely special for the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This year, Mahashivratri will be celebrated on February 15, 2026. According to religious beliefs, this date commemorates the divine union of Shiva and Parvati.

It is also believed that Lord Shiva first manifested in the form of a Shivling on this day. This is why there is a special ritual of performing Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shivling on Mahashivratri. It is said that worship performed with a sincere heart on this day removes life's troubles, pacifies planetary afflictions, and brings wealth and prosperity. Bringing some sacred items home from the temple after performing Abhishek on Mahashivratri is also considered very auspicious.
How to perform Abhishek of the Shivling on Mahashivratri:
First, offer a pot of water to the Shivling. It is believed that Lord Shiva is pleased with just a water offering and fulfills the wishes of his devotees.
After that, offer some milk, which brings financial stability.
Performing Abhishek with curd removes mental unrest and helps in completing stalled tasks.
Then offer honey to the Shivling; this brings sweetness to married life and provides relief from illnesses.
Those who desire children should perform Abhishek of Lord Shiva with ghee.
Performing Abhishek with black sesame seeds protects against negative energies and removes tantric obstacles.
Finally, perform the proper worship of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva with all the necessary offerings.
Bring these sacred items home from the temple on Mahashivratri:
Belpatra (Bael leaves): Bringing home the Belpatra offered to the Shivling after the Abhishek is considered auspicious. Keeping it in a locker or purse ensures that there is no shortage of money.

Items offered to Goddess Parvati: On this day, bangles, sindoor (vermilion), or henna offered to Goddess Parvati should be brought home and worn. It is believed that this maintains good fortune, increases the husband's lifespan, and strengthens love in married life. Take a small amount of the water used for the Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shiva Lingam in a small pot and sprinkle it in all the corners of your house. It can also be sprinkled on a sick person. This is believed to remove negative energy and promote healing.
