Lighting a lamp for ancestors
On the night of Amavasya, one should light a lamp outside the house, facing south, or at the main entrance of the house. The south direction is considered the direction of ancestors. While lighting the lamp, meditate on your ancestors with folded hands and chant "Om Pitru Devaya Namah" in one's mind. Doing so brings the blessings of ancestors.

Keep a vessel filled with water.
At night, fill a vessel with clean water on the roof or balcony of your house. In the morning, offer this water to a Peepal tree. Doing so removes negative energy from the house.

Reciting the Bhagavad Gita
Before going to bed at night, meditate on your ancestors and recite the seventh chapter of the Gita. Doing so grants salvation to your ancestors and also reduces the impact of Pitra Dosh in the horoscope.

Donation
Donate warm clothes, blankets, and food on the next day of Margashirsha Amavasya or the same night. It is said that donating blankets reduces the inauspicious effects of Saturn and Rahu. It also ensures that there is never a shortage of food in the house.
