The month of Margashirsha holds special and supreme significance in Hinduism. It is considered highly auspicious for singing hymns, performing charity, and performing religious rituals. It is also known as the month of Lord Krishna, as it was during this month that Lord Krishna imparted the divine knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. It is believed that following certain rules during this month brings happiness and prosperity to the home and maintains Lord Krishna's blessings. Certain actions should be avoided during Margashirsha.

Extra caution is advised regarding diet during this month, and emphasis is placed on eating sattvic food whenever possible. The scriptures prohibit the consumption of certain items.
Donating clothes is also considered highly virtuous.
Spiritual guru Pt. Harimohan Sharma of Karauli states that everyone should engage in singing hymns and chanting during this month, as Lord Krishna himself has called this month his month. According to Sharma, the best deed of Margashirsha is to donate food. Donations of the new crops harvested during this season should be made as per one's capacity. Donating woolen clothes is also considered highly virtuous.
Those who engage in bhajan-kirtan (songs), chanting, and meditation during this month are advised to exercise special caution. Such individuals should eat sattvik food and observe celibacy. Sleeping on the ground as much as possible during this month is advocated, as it is considered to have special spiritual significance.
Consumption of certain foods is also prohibited. Vegetables like eggplant, cauliflower, and radish should be avoided during Margashirsha, as they are considered to be of a tamasic nature. Spiritual guru Pt. Harimohan Sharma advises that during this month, one should keep the mind pure, stay away from vices, and devote as much time as possible to bhajan-kirtan (songs).

Avoid using mustard oil during Margashirsha.
The use of mustard oil is especially prohibited during this month. It should neither be used in food nor applied to the body. Using sesame oil instead is considered preferable. Mustard oil is considered tamasic in nature. Pandit Sharma explains that mustard pods lean south, and using objects that lean south is classically considered inauspicious during this month.
