Mauni Amavasya 2026 Pitra Remedies: Mauni Amavasya is observed on the Amavasya (new moon) day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Magha month. On Mauni Amavasya, people bathe in holy rivers, followed by acts of charity. This is believed to wash away sins and bring merit. According to religious beliefs, performing a pilgrimage bath on Mauni Amavasya easily grants the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Those who are troubled by Pitra Dosha (ancestral curse) or whose ancestors are displeased, leading to a lack of progress for the entire family and causing suffering, should perform certain remedies on Mauni Amavasya. Today, we are telling you about 5 remedies to be performed on Mauni Amavasya, which can free you from Pitra Dosha and appease your displeased ancestors, who will then bestow their blessings.

When is Mauni Amavasya? Before learning about the remedies for Mauni Amavasya, let us tell you that this year, Mauni Amavasya is on Sunday, January 18th. According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), the date of Magha Krishna Amavasya, i.e., Mauni Amavasya, is from 12:03 AM on January 18th to 1:21 AM on January 19th.
Remedies for Pitra Dosha on Mauni Amavasya - Offering Tarpan with Ganges water: On Mauni Amavasya, bathe in the Sangam (confluence) at Prayagraj. It is said that bathing in the Sangam brings merit and the blessings of Lord Vishnu. After bathing, remember your ancestors and offer them Tarpan (libations) with Ganges water. Mother Ganga is the giver of salvation; with her grace, your ancestors will attain liberation. Your displeased ancestors will also be pleased and bless you. While performing Tarpan, wear a ring made of Kusha grass on your finger. Offer the water to your ancestors through the tips of the Kusha grass.
Donations for ancestors: After bathing on Mauni Amavasya, one must perform acts of charity. On this day, donate food according to your capacity. White clothes are donated to ancestors. Therefore, on Mauni Amavasya, donate warm white clothes for your ancestors. Tripindi Shraddha: If you have Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction) or if your ancestors are troubled for any reason, you should perform Tripindi Shraddha for them in Kashi, Gaya, or Trimbakeshwar. Performing Tripindi Shraddha pacifies Pitru Dosha. The ancestors' displeasure is removed, and they become happy and bestow blessings for prosperity. Tripindi Shraddha is performed for the ancestors of three generations whose souls are unhappy; it brings them peace and contentment. This ritual involves the worship of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. During the Shraddha, offerings of food (pindas) are made to the ancestors.
Recitation for Liberation from Pitru Dosha: On Mauni Amavasya, to appease displeased ancestors or to be freed from Pitru Dosha, one should recite the Pitru Sukta or Pitru Kavach. Alternatively, you can recite the seventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. This removes Pitru Dosha, and the ancestors can attain liberation from the realm of spirits.

Lighting a Lamp: On the evening of Mauni Amavasya, when the sun sets, the ancestors begin their return to Pitru Loka (the ancestral realm). Therefore, you should light a lamp with mustard oil outside your house, facing south, for your ancestors. Their path is illuminated by the light, and seeing this, they are pleased and bestow blessings. A lamp is also lit under a peepal tree on this day.
