Mauni Amavasya: Do this one thing on Mauni Amavasya! Lord Vishnu will open the gates of Vaikuntha..

From a spiritual and religious perspective, the month of Magh holds special significance. This year, Mauni Amavasya, also known as Maghi Amavasya, will be celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country on January 18, 2026 (Sunday). This year's observance is particularly special in many ways because the Sun God will be in the Capricorn zodiac sign on this day. The fact that it falls on a Sunday creates a rare and auspicious conjunction.

This day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the ancestors.
Pandit Manotpal Jha, a renowned scholar from Purnea, highlighted the importance of this day, explaining that Mauni Amavasya is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the ancestors. Lord Vishnu, the lord of Vaikuntha and the sustainer of the entire universe, is best worshipped on this day to receive his blessings. According to Pandit Jha, Amavasya means a night, but this Amavasya of Magh is like a light that grants salvation to the ancestors. Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day helps the ancestors attain heaven.

The Significance of Bathing and Charity
The scriptures state that those who bathe in a holy river, such as the Ganges, before sunrise on Mauni Amavasya attain immense merit. Pandit Jha explains that the presence of the Sun in Capricorn multiplies the significance of this day. From Makar Sankranti onwards, the days gradually become longer, symbolizing positivity in life.

Donating these items on this day is especially fruitful:
Black and red blankets, warm clothes and shoes, sesame seeds and jaggery.

Ancestral Offerings Bring Peace
This day is considered the best for liberation from ancestral curses and for performing ancestral rites. Those who perform charity and ancestral offerings on this day not only attain mental peace but also experience the progress of their lineage. It is believed that those who bathe in the Ganges during Magh attain Vaikuntha Dham (the abode of Lord Vishnu).
