In the month of Jyeshtha, when the Sun God (Surya Dev) enters the Rohini Nakshatra (constellation), this period is known as 'Nautapa.' As the name itself suggests, it signifies "nine days of scorching heat." During this time, intense heat prevails, accompanied by severe heatwaves (Loo). Worshipping the Sun God holds special significance during this specific period. Let us explore the specific precautions and practices you should observe during the nine days of Nautapa.

**When Nautapa Begins**
In the year 2026, Nautapa commences on May 25th and is set to continue until June 2nd. During Nautapa, intense heat persists for approximately 9 to 10 days—a phenomenon considered auspicious for the arrival of the monsoon. This concept is also described in the following *Shloka* (verse):
"In the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) of the month of Jyeshtha, when the Sun enters the Rohini Nakshatra (or *Adra*), if intense heat prevails from that moment through the subsequent ten constellations, it foretells a bountiful monsoon."
**Recommended Practices**
In Sanatan Dharma, the period of Nautapa is considered immensely significant for appeasing the Sun God, thereby strengthening the position of the Sun in one's horoscope and attaining excellent health. Consequently, during this time, one should rise early in the morning; after completing one's ablutions and bath, offer *Arghya* (ritual water offering) to the Sun and chant mantras dedicated to the Sun God to maintain a flow of positive energy. Furthermore, establishing *Pyau* (public drinking water stalls) and donating items such as water, *Sharbat* (sweet beverages), *Sattu* (roasted gram flour), earthen pots, umbrellas, cotton clothing, hand-held fans, and seasonal fruits is considered particularly meritorious during this period.
**Rules and Guidelines for Nautapa**
During Nautapa, one should refrain from undertaking *Mangalik* (auspicious) ceremonies—such as weddings, *Griha Pravesh* (housewarming ceremonies), etc.—as doing so is believed to disrupt domestic peace and harmony.
During this period, one should consume light and easily digestible food as much as possible.
To garner auspicious results, you may arrange for water provisions for birds and animals during Nautapa.
If a needy person approaches your home requesting water or food, they should not be turned away empty-handed.
This period is also considered highly suitable for performing *Jal-daan* (water donation) and *Tarpan* (ritual offerings to ancestors) in honor of one's forefathers (*Pitras*). Observe These Precautions
During Nautapa, one should consume cooling items—such as curd, buttermilk, lassi, Bael sherbet, coconut water, and watermelon—as much as possible.
Refrain from consuming hot, spicy, fried, and non-vegetarian foods during this period.
Avoid stepping out of the house into the scorching sun unless necessary, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
Also, avoid excessive travel during Nautapa unless it is unavoidable.
