New Ropeway Project: 9-Hour Journey Reduced to Just 36 Minutes! Government Approves Two Ropeway Projects
The central government has given the green light to two major ropeway projects in Uttarakhand, drastically cutting travel time for pilgrims and tourists. These projects, Sonprayag to Kedarnath (12.9 km) and Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji (12.4 km), will collectively cost ₹6,811 crore and are expected to be completed within four to six years.
Sonprayag-Kedarnath Ropeway Project
To ease the journey for Kedarnath pilgrims, the government has approved a 12.9 km long ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath. Built on the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, this project will cost ₹4,081.28 crore and will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode using Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology.
- Capacity: 1,800 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD) and up to 18,000 passengers per day.
- Current Challenge: Pilgrims currently undertake a difficult 16 km trek from Gaurikund on foot, mules, or dolis.
- Future Benefit: Once operational, the ropeway will ensure a safe and smooth journey in all seasons.
Govindghat-Hemkund Sahib Ropeway Project
A 12.4 km long ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji will be constructed to facilitate access for pilgrims and tourists visiting the Valley of Flowers. This project will cost ₹2,730.13 crore and will also be developed on the DBFOT model.
- Current Challenge: Devotees must currently cover a challenging 21 km trek on foot, mules, or dolis.
- Future Benefit: The ropeway will make travel easier, faster, and accessible in all seasons.
