Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Be Sure to Know These 5 Major Rules Before Observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast..

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: In Hinduism, Nirjala Ekadashi—which falls during the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) of the month of *Jyeshtha*—is considered the most significant of all Ekadashis, as it is regarded as the most rigorous and spiritually meritorious fast. It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day helps resolve even the most severe crises. It is said that anyone who observes the Nirjala Ekadashi fast with true devotion reaps spiritual rewards equivalent to observing all the Ekadashi fasts throughout the entire year.

This is precisely why this fast is held in such high esteem. In the year 2026, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast will be observed on Thursday, June 25. The *Parana* (breaking of the fast) will take place on Friday, June 26, between 5:25 AM and 8:13 AM. However, this fast is not considered a standard fast, as it entails worshipping Lord Vishnu while abstaining completely from water consumption for the entire day. Consequently, it is considered essential to adhere to certain specific rules before undertaking this fast.

**Nirjala Ekadashi Tithi (Date)**

The Ekadashi *Tithi* (lunar day) of the *Shukla Paksha* in the month of *Jyeshtha* will commence on June 24, 2026, at 6:12 PM and will continue until 8:09 PM on June 25, 2026. Based on the *Udaya Tithi* (the lunar day prevailing at sunrise), the Nirjala Ekadashi fast will be observed on Thursday, June 25.

**Learn the 5 Essential Rules of Nirjala Ekadashi**

The Nirjala Ekadashi fast effectively begins on the night of the *Dashami Tithi* (the tenth lunar day). Therefore, on this day, one should abstain from *Tamasic* foods (foods that induce lethargy or agitation), garlic, onions, and grains. Instead, one should consume *Sattvic* food (pure, wholesome food) before commencing the fast.

According to the scriptures, during the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, one must not consume any water from sunrise until the *Dwadashi Tithi* (the twelfth lunar day) of the following day. Therefore, one must strictly avoid consuming anything whatsoever during this specific period. Observing this fast is believed to attract the special grace and blessings of Lord Vishnu.

On the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, after taking a morning bath, one should wear yellow-colored garments. Thereafter, one should perform the worship of Lord Vishnu. Offer *Panchamrit* (a sacred mixture of five ingredients) accompanied by a *Tulsi* leaf to the Lord.

Thereafter, chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" throughout the day. This practice is considered highly auspicious; furthermore, it helps keep the mind calm and positive.

Nirjala Ekadashi falls during the peak of the summer season. Consequently, donating items related to water is considered an act of immense merit. On this day, one should donate items such as a water-filled earthen pot or a hand fan. Doing so ensures the continuity of happiness and prosperity in one's life.

According to the scriptures, merely observing a fast on Nirjala Ekadashi is not considered sufficient; rather, it is also deemed essential to maintain a calm mind, refrain from anger, and speak gently on this day. Chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu, engaging in devotional singing (*Bhajan-Kirtan*), and performing acts of charity and benevolence ensure that one reaps the full spiritual rewards of the fast.
