Nestled in the lap of the Shatrunjaya Hills in the Bhavnagar district of the Indian state of Gujarat, Palitana is a unique place known as the "City of Temples." Formerly known as Padalipatpur, this city is a center of unwavering faith for Jain followers.

It is characterized by over 800 marble temples. This is why it is called the City of Temples. Let's learn more about them.
Over 800 Magnificent Temples
In Jainism, it is believed that visiting these temples at least once in one's lifetime is essential for attaining nirvana, or salvation. Located on the Shatrunjaya Hills, this site is so vast and magnificent that it boasts approximately 863 marble-carved temples.
The journey to reach these temples is no less than a journey of penance. Devotees must climb approximately 3,500 steps to reach the main temple. This site is also special because, according to belief, 23 of the 24 Tirthankaras, except Neminatha, visited here and sanctified the hill with their presence.
Night Stays Are Prohibited
The most unique feature of Palitana is that it is considered the sole abode of the gods. This is why no human being is allowed to spend the night here after sunset. Even the priests serving the temples are required to descend the hill before nightfall. This tradition has been followed for centuries to maintain the sanctity and divinity of this place.
Main Temple and Religious Significance
The main temple on the hill is dedicated to the first Tirthankara, Rishabhdev. It is considered the most sacred pilgrimage site for the Svetambara idol worshippers. However, a temple of the Digambara Jain community is also located here. This entire area is not only religiously significant but is also renowned worldwide for its amazing carvings and architecture.
