Parenting: If your daughter is 12 to 13 years old, this is how your mother can guide her about periods...

Entering adolescence is a transitional time for any child, but it's especially sensitive for girls, as they experience mental, hormonal, and physical changes. This is also the time when menstruation begins. Some girls start their periods at 13, while others start at 14 or 15. This timing depends on hormonal changes, but it's important to provide your daughter with some basic information about this beforehand so that she doesn't feel overwhelmed by this new change or consider it a disease. She can embrace it naturally and accept it as a normal change in her life.

Even today, periods are not discussed openly in Indian society. Until the first period begins, girls often have zero knowledge about it because they aren't told anything. In this article, we'll explore what mothers should teach their teenage daughters in advance.

Teach Hygiene
Pubic hair begins to appear shortly before adolescence, so it's crucial to educate your daughter on proper hygiene. Furthermore, gradually start teaching your daughter about how to maintain menstrual hygiene, such as wearing clean undergarments daily, cleaning her private parts, and using pads or tampons during her period.

Periods are normal.
Teach your daughter in advance that periods are a very normal process that every woman experiences. They experience pain, cramps, and mood swings, among other problems. She shouldn't be worried about them, but can openly share them with you. You will be there to support her. This will increase your child's awareness of periods and allay any fears.

Explain physical changes
Along with periods, teenage years also experience physical changes, such as breast tenderness and changes in body shape. Therefore, educate them about dressing styles during this time. This doesn't mean asking them to cover their bodies with excessive clothing; instead, explain how to choose clothing based on physical changes, such as the type of underwear they should wear.

Also, tell your daughter these important things:
Inform your daughter that periods can last from three to five days, and for some girls, they can last 6 to 7 days in the early months. The menstrual cycle is 21 to 35 days. If your period is late, be sure to discuss it with her. Red or slightly dark bleeding may occur during this time, but don't panic. If your period starts suddenly, don't panic; instead, seek help. If you're in school, tell a friend or teacher about it.

Teach your daughter to help other girls.
Tell her that her period cycle can be delayed by a day or two, so she should carry sanitary napkins, tissues, and tampons with her. If another girl is experiencing similar problems, she should be sure to help her.
