Parenting Tips: Should a child be given a pillow? What is the right age to use a pillow? This question is on almost every parent's mind. Some believe that using a pillow helps a child sleep comfortably and maintains the correct shape of their head, while others argue that it's harmful for children. If you have this question, this article may be helpful. Let's find out what experts have to say about it.

How old should children be when they brush their teeth?

How appropriate is it for children to use a pillow?
Discussing this topic, pediatrician Parth Soni shared a video on his Instagram handle. In the video, the pediatrician explains that a child's neck muscles are developing. Free movement of the neck is essential for the proper development of these muscles. If a pillow is used, the child's neck doesn't have enough free movement, which can hinder their natural development.

Posture Can Be Bad
Dr. Soni further explains that using a pillow puts pressure on a child's cervical spine (neck bones). If this happens for a long time, the child's posture can be impaired.

Danger of Breathing Problems
Apart from these, another major risk of using a pillow is that it can block a child's upper airway. Pediatricians explain that the airways of young children are very delicate. If pressure is placed on the nose and mouth while sleeping, it can cause difficulty breathing. This situation can even be dangerous.

When is it safe to use a pillow?
According to doctors, children under one year of age should not use pillows at all. It is safest to put the baby to sleep on a straight and flat mattress for at least 12 months. Pillows can be gradually introduced once the child turns one year old and the bones in the neck and spine have become stronger.

In such a situation, always put newborns and young infants to sleep on a flat mattress.
If the child needs some elevation under the head, you can use a special baby pillow or a folded light cloth, as per the doctor's advice.

Never place a large or thick pillow under the child.
Pillows are unsafe for young children. Pillows can adversely affect their neck, posture, and breathing. Therefore, the best and safest option is to put the child to sleep without a pillow for at least one year. After one year, a light pillow can be used as per the doctor's advice.
