Parenting Tips: Should you breastfeed your baby before bed? Ask your pediatrician for answers...

Should we give milk to kids at night? Feeding babies before bedtime is a common habit. It happens in almost every household. Parents believe that breastfeeding will help their baby fall asleep faster and provide energy. But is it always right to breastfeed at night? Pediatrician Rohit Bhardwaj has some important insights into this matter. The pediatrician shared a video on his Instagram handle, explaining the effects of breastfeeding before bedtime on a child's body and how appropriate it is. Let's find out more about this:

What does the pediatrician say?

Dr. Rohit Bhardwaj explains that breastfeeding during the day is perfectly fine. However, sometimes breastfeeding at night can cause several problems for the child. Sometimes, children experience symptoms like a sudden cough, a mucus-like feeling, shortness of breath, or frequent sleep interruptions. This is often mistaken for a cold, but in 60% of cases, it's actually caused by milk.

How does breastfeeding worsen the problem?

According to the doctor, when a child is given milk or biscuits, cookies, rusks, or sweet snacks just before bedtime, it is not properly digested in the stomach. When the child lies down at night, the combination of milk and these sweets causes acid reflux. This reflux causes coughing, a feeling of phlegm in the throat, restlessness, and sleep disturbances. This is not an infection but a problem related to eating habits. The good news is that this problem can be resolved simply by changing the routine.

How to avoid this problem?

Dr. Rohit Bhardwaj has some simple tips for this:

Give your child milk about 1 to 1.5 hours before bedtime.

Do not give biscuits, rusks, cookies, chocolate, or sweet snacks with milk.

Give your child light and healthy food at night, and avoid a very late dinner.

In addition, if the child coughs at night, put the child to sleep with their head slightly elevated.

With these small changes, the child can get a comfortable sleep at night, and the problem of cough and phlegm also reduces.
