Pregnancy Stretch Marks Tips: As a pregnant woman's abdomen expands during pregnancy, stretch marks often begin to appear on the skin. Although these are entirely natural and harmless, they can sometimes look unsightly. Women's bodies undergo various changes during this period; one common issue among these is stretch marks, also known as *striae gravidarum*.

Stretch marks manifest as light or dark streaks visible on the abdomen, thighs, hips, and occasionally around the breasts. While they pose no physical harm, for many women, they become a source of anxiety and discomfort. Essentially, when the deeper layers of the skin are unable to fully withstand the stretching tension, tiny scars form in those areas—these are what we call stretch marks. Initially, they appear pink or red, but over time, they fade to a pale white color.
**Stretch Marks Can Be Prevented**
According to Ayurveda, if the skin receives nourishment from within and proper care from the outside, these marks can be significantly minimized, or their severity can be effectively mitigated. For this purpose, the use of natural oils and herbs is highly recommended.
**Natural Remedies for Stretch Marks**
In Ayurvedic practice, medicinal ingredients such as sandalwood (*Chandan*), vetiver (*Ushira*), and holy basil (*Tulsi*) hold special significance. It is advised to prepare a paste using these ingredients, mix it with a light oil, and apply it regularly to the abdomen. It is believed that this regimen helps keep the skin supple and provides relief from the itching and irritation often associated with skin stretching. Specifically, it is recommended to begin this skincare routine from the fourth month of pregnancy; continuing it throughout the entire gestation period can yield the best results.
Additionally, oils or pastes prepared from *Karanj* leaves are also considered beneficial for maintaining skin elasticity. This remedy nourishes the skin and alleviates dryness, thereby reducing the likelihood of stretch marks forming to a considerable extent. Furthermore, a balanced diet plays a crucial role. When the body receives adequate water, fruits, green vegetables, and nutrients, the skin remains strong from within. This, too, can help reduce the likelihood of developing stretch marks.

**Keep This in Mind**
According to Ayurveda, one should refrain from scratching the skin if itching occurs during pregnancy. People often inadvertently rub their skin, which can exacerbate stretch marks. For mild itching, it is advisable to use natural oils or seek medical advice. Additionally, it is important to understand that completely preventing stretch marks is not always possible. However, with proper care, regular oil massages, and Ayurvedic remedies, they can be significantly minimized, and the skin can be kept healthy.
