The Tulsi plant holds special significance in Sanatan Dharma. According to religious beliefs, worshipping Tulsi invites the presence of Goddess Lakshmi into the home and ensures the maintenance of peace and harmony among family members. There are two main varieties of Tulsi: Rama Tulsi and Shyama Tulsi. In this article, we will guide you on which variety—Rama or Shyama—you should plant in your home.

The Difference Between Rama and Shyama Tulsi
The leaves of Rama Tulsi are green in color and possess a slightly sweet taste. According to religious beliefs, this variety of Tulsi is considered a symbol of progress and prosperity. According to Vastu Shastra, planting Rama Tulsi in the home helps maintain peace, harmony, and positive energy. This variety of Tulsi is extremely dear to Lord Vishnu, the Preserver of the Universe.
Shyama Tulsi
The leaves of Shyama Tulsi are dark green or light purple in color. It possesses a more pungent fragrance. This variety of Tulsi is associated with Lord Krishna. According to religious beliefs, planting this variety in the home fosters spiritual growth and offers protection against illnesses.
Which Tulsi Should You Plant at Home?
According to Vastu and the scriptures, planting both Rama and Shyama Tulsi in the home is considered auspicious. You may also plant both varieties together within the home.
In Which Direction Should Tulsi Be Planted?
Selecting an auspicious direction is essential when planting Tulsi in the home. According to Vastu, the North, North-East (Ishan Kon), or East directions of the house are considered auspicious for planting Tulsi. Planting Tulsi in these directions yields auspicious results and leads to an increase in happiness and prosperity.
One should strictly avoid planting Tulsi in the South direction, as this direction is associated with the ancestors (Pitrs); planting it there may cause the resident to face issues related to Vastu defects.

On Which Day Should It Be Planted?
Thursday or Friday are considered auspicious days for planting Tulsi. Additionally, planting Tulsi during the month of Kartik is considered particularly fruitful. Keep These Points in Mind:
One should strictly avoid plucking Tulsi leaves on Sundays, Ekadashi, solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, and after sunset. Doing so may displease Goddess Lakshmi.
