Saphala Ekadashi 2025: In his Krishna avatar, Lord Vishnu, while instructing Arjuna, the son of Pandu, before the Mahabharata war, said, "O Arjuna! I am the Peepal tree among all trees, Narada among the divine sages, Chitraratha among the Gandharvas, Kapila Muni among the Siddhas, Ekadashi among the lunar days, and the Ganges among the rivers." According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, when Narada asked about the significance of Ekadashi, Lord Narayana said, "O sage! This Ekadashi fast is rare even for the gods. Just as Lord Krishna is supreme among the gods, Prakriti among the goddesses, Brahmins among the castes, and Lord Shiva among the Vaishnavas, similarly, the Ekadashi fast is supreme among all fasts."

It is believed that Lord Vishnu, for the welfare of humanity, created a total of 26 Ekadashis from his own body, including those of Purushottama Masa (Adhik Maas). All these Ekadashis bestow special merit and pave the way to liberation. The Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Pausha month is called 'Saphala Ekadashi'. As its name suggests, Saphala Ekadashi makes all endeavors successful and complete. The Puranas state that the merit obtained from performing penance for thousands of years is attained by observing the Saphala Ekadashi fast with devotion and keeping vigil throughout the night.
How to please Lord Hari:
In the morning, during the Brahma Muhurta, take a bath, wear clean clothes, and take a vow to observe the fast. Purify the place of worship and place the idol of Lord Vishnu or the Shaligram on a yellow cloth. Light a lamp and offer sandalwood paste, unbroken rice grains, flowers, Tulsi leaves, and fruits to the Lord. Chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama. In the evening, perform lamp offering and worship the Lord by keeping vigil throughout the night. The religious scriptures emphasize the importance of offering lamps at the temple and under the Tulsi plant on this day. On the next day, Dwadashi, donate food and clothes to Brahmins and the needy. By observing the fast in this manner, one attains happiness, prosperity, and success in life through the grace of Lord Vishnu. Those who are unable to observe the fast on this Ekadashi for any reason should recite the stories of the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu on this day. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana is also considered highly beneficial on this day. During the Ekadashi fast, a person renounces material desires and purifies their mind, speech, and actions. Remembering the name of Lord Vishnu and worshipping Him during the fast purifies the soul.

According to the Puranas, Lumbhaka, the eldest son of King Mahishmat, was always engrossed in sinful activities and constantly criticized the gods and goddesses. Seeing his son's wicked ways, the king tried to reason with him, but when he refused to change, the king banished him from his kingdom. The sinful Lumbhaka began to live in the forest, subsisting on meat and fruits. His resting place was near a very old peepal tree. On the tenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Pausha, he became almost lifeless due to the cold. The next day, on Safala Ekadashi, he regained consciousness in the afternoon due to the warmth of the sun. Weakened by hunger, Lumbhaka went to gather fruits, but by the time he returned, the sun had set. He then offered the fruits at the base of the peepal tree, saying, "May Lord Vishnu, the consort of Lakshmi, be pleased with these fruits." Unintentionally, Lumbhaka observed the fast, and as a result, he received a divine form, a kingdom, a son, and everything else he desired. By reading or listening to the glory of Safala Ekadashi, a person attains the merit of performing a Rajasuya Yagna.
