How did Nandi become Lord Shiva's vehicle?

According to legend, there was a sage named Shilad. He was deeply immersed in the devotion of Mahadev. He had no children. His ancestors once told him that his lineage was dying out. He urged him to find a way to have a child. To this end, he performed penance to Mahadev. Mahadev was pleased with his devotion and blessed him with a son. Some time later, while plowing the land, he found a child and named him Nandi.

Once, two sages arrived at Maharishi Shilad's ashram and told him that Nandi's lifespan was very short. He would only live for eight years. Hearing this, Shilad was troubled. Nandi then told his father, "Father, you have found me by the grace of Mahadev." Nandi then began to meditate on Mahadev.

Delighted by his devotion, Mahadev appeared before Nandi. The Lord told Nandi, "You are a part of me; how can you fear death?" He granted him the boon of immortality. From that day on, Nandi became an integral part of Lord Shiva and sat before the Shivalinga. Therefore, in every Shiva temple, an idol of Nandi is placed before the Shivalinga.
