Social media is just as dangerous for children as smoking; this addiction has a profound impact on both the body and the mind..

A recent report by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has heightened parental concerns. According to this report, social media poses a danger to children comparable to that of smoking. While this may sound surprising, social media exerts a direct influence on children's mental, physical, and social development.

To learn more about this issue, we spoke with Dr. Vivek Jain (Senior Director and Unit Head—Pediatrics, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh). Let’s find out what the doctor has to say on the matter.

**A Severe Blow to Mental Health**
Social media’s primary and most damaging impact is upon a child's psyche. The glitz, glamour, and portrayal of "perfect lives" on social media platforms foster feelings of inadequacy and inferiority in children. They constantly begin comparing themselves to the content in Reels and to social media influencers; consequently, symptoms of low self-esteem, stress, and depression begin to manifest at a remarkably young age.

Furthermore, the craving for "likes" and comments exacerbates children's stress levels. The desire to become an influencer at a young age often pushes them down a path of self-harm. Additionally, the fear of missing out (FOMO) compels them to remain glued to their phones at all times. Incidents such as online trolling, abusive comments, and identity theft can mentally shatter children, leaving them vulnerable to loneliness and depression.

**Detriment to Physical Health**
Sitting in front of screens for hours on end is having a direct impact on children's physical constitution and overall health. Late-night scrolling deprives children of adequate sleep. The blue light emitted by screens interferes with the production of the hormone melatonin, leading to increased instances of insomnia, headaches, and irritability.

Moreover, social media has now supplanted outdoor games and physical activities. As a result, conditions such as obesity, vision impairment, and spinal issues have become increasingly common among children at a young age.

**Social Isolation and Addiction**
Social media algorithms are designed in such a way as to keep the user hooked. Children's brains are not yet fully developed; consequently, they easily get trapped in the dopamine loop associated with technology. They begin to perceive the virtual world as the only reality. As a result, they become increasingly distant from their real-life friends, family interactions, and personal hobbies.

What is the solution?
In today's world, it is not feasible to keep children completely isolated from technology. Therefore, the most effective preventive measure is proper guidance.

It is essential for parents to set fixed limits on their children's screen time and ensure that these limits are adhered to.
Designate bedrooms and dining tables as "no-screen zones"—meaning, strictly prohibit the use of electronic gadgets in these areas.
Engage in open and honest conversations with your children, and educate them about cybersecurity and bullying.
Incorporate outdoor activities into your children's daily routine; encourage them to spend some time each day playing outside or exercising.
