Solah Somvar Vrat Rules: The holy month of Sawan, dedicated to Mahadev, is set to begin soon. This month is considered the most auspicious and spiritually rewarding for devotees of Lord Shiva. Throughout the month of Sawan, special prayers, Rudrabhishek, Jalabhishek (ritual bathing with water), and devotional singing (bhajan-kirtan) are organized at Shiva temples across the country. Additionally, a large number of devotees undertake the Kanwar Yatra to perform the ritual bathing of Lord Shiva with holy water.

Religious belief holds that worshiping Lord Shiva with a sincere heart during Sawan pleases Mahadev quickly and fulfills the devotees' wishes. Many devotees also begin the 'Solah Somvar Vrat' (Sixteen Mondays Fast) during this holy month. This fast is considered a highly effective and auspicious way to seek the special grace of Lord Shiva.
It is believed that if one resolves to observe the Solah Somvar Vrat with devotion during the month of Shravan, it brings happiness, prosperity, marital bliss, financial progress, and mental peace into one's life. However, it is essential to follow certain important rules before commencing this fast. Let us look at three major rules associated with the Solah Somvar Vrat.
When does Sawan begin this year?
This year, the month of Sawan will begin on July 30, 2026, and continue until August 28, 2026.
First Monday of Sawan – August 3, 2026
Second Monday of Sawan – August 10, 2026
Third Monday of Sawan – August 17, 2026
Fourth Monday of Sawan – August 24, 2026
Taking the Vow (Sankalp)
Before starting the Solah Somvar Vrat, meditate on Lord Shiva and take the vow to observe the fast with full devotion and sincerity. Once the vow is taken, avoid abandoning the fast midway without a valid reason.
Perform Worship with Proper Rituals Every Monday
If you begin the Solah Somvar Vrat, perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva every Monday and offer Bel leaves, Datura, and other worship materials. Additionally, make sure to recite the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha (narrative), perform Shiva Aarti, and chant Shiva mantras. Do not forget to perform the *Udyapan* (concluding ritual) of the fast.

After completing all the 'Solah Somvar' (Sixteen Mondays) fasts, the concluding ritual (*Udyapan*) should be performed with due rites on the 17th Monday. On this day, offer special worship to Lord Shiva, distribute *Prasad*, and engage in acts of charity according to your means.
