Space Gen Chandrayaan Review: Big story, big hype... but no impact; too much emotion overshadows the real story..

We all remember that night when the Chandrayaan-2 lander lost contact at the last moment. In a matter of seconds, all hope was dashed, and the atmosphere became eerily silent. The web series 'Space Gen Chandrayaan' begins by capturing this very emotion. This five-episode series shows how the team recovered from that setback and regrouped to prepare for Chandrayaan-3. The beginning is quite emotional and impactful, but as the series progresses, the effect weakens somewhat.

The Story
The series depicts the failure of Chandrayaan-2, the fear and anxiety of ISRO chief Shankaran Nair (Uday Mahesh), and scientific advisor Rakesh Mohanty (Gopal Dutt). It then shows the responsibility that falls on Project Director Yamini Mudaliar (Shriya Saran) and navigation expert Arjun Verma (Nakul Mehta).

The investigation committee is headed by Sudarshan Ramaiya (Prakash Belawadi), who, unlike others, doesn't get angry but calmly tries to understand the mistake. Later, Shankaran retires, and Ramaiya, albeit reluctantly, becomes the head of the entire space center.

Then the preparation for Chandrayaan-3 begins, but Covid-19, repeated work stoppages, and Russia's sudden announcement of launching Luna-25 all combine to increase the pressure on the mission. The story shows that the initial failure didn't break the team, but rather made them stronger.

The series follows two tracks. The track focusing on the hard work of the ISRO scientists is compelling, while Arjun Verma's personal family story doesn't quite fit in and feels somewhat disconnected. Ramaiya's background and the social challenges he faced are depicted quite well and add depth to the story.

However, the truth is that if the real challenges of Chandrayaan-3 had been given more screen time, the story would have been more impactful.

Shriya Saran has done a commendable job. Her calm and composed demeanor keeps the story balanced. Nakul Mehta is decent in some scenes, but in many places, his acting feels a bit too heavy-handed, as if the emotions are being forced. He comes across as overacting in several scenes.
Danish Sait provides some relief, but his role is small. Gopal Dutt's character is portrayed as unnecessarily irritable and strict, which feels a bit out of place in the story. Prakash Belawadi was good, but his character wasn't as well-developed as it could have been.

Positive aspects
Some parts of the series were genuinely good – especially the moments when the team shows the courage to get back on their feet after failure. The tension during the mission and the human emotions also come across well in some scenes. The series effectively conveys the immense effort of the many people behind a major mission like ISRO's.

Negative aspects
There's a lot of drama. Many meetings turn into arguments, and every scene is filled with loud voices, anger, and heightened emotions, making even some good moments feel overwhelming. At times, the crying and emotional outbursts are so excessive that they feel more theatrical than realistic.

The story lacks the depth it should have for this subject matter, and in some places, it feels like things are rushed.

Watch or not?
If you are interested in space missions and ISRO's efforts, this series is worth watching once. Some parts are enjoyable and provide some inspiration. However, if you are expecting a lot of excitement, depth, or a consistently engaging storyline, this series might disappoint you.
The story slows down in several places. Many scenes feel overdramatic. Overall, if you watch this series with very high expectations, you might be a little disappointed.
