Temple Puja Rules: In Hindu tradition, the custom of ringing the bell or gong in a temple has been practiced for centuries. A deep spiritual and scientific significance is hidden behind this practice. It is believed that the sound of the bell produces vibrations similar to 'Om', which purifies both the mind and the environment. This is why the tradition of ringing the bell upon entering the temple has been given special importance. Several scriptures, including the Skanda Purana, mention that the sound of the bell destroys negative energy and activates divine powers.

However, it is important to follow certain rules and precautions while performing this act. A small mistake made unknowingly can hinder the full benefits of the puja. Therefore, it is essential to know when and how to ring the temple bell.
When to Ring the Temple Bell
According to the scriptures, ringing the bell upon entering the temple is considered most auspicious. The sound of the bell frees the mind from worldly worries and promotes concentration, allowing the devotee to perform puja with complete devotion. Ringing the bell during Aarti is also considered highly beneficial, as it multiplies the energy of the puja.
Even in a home temple, the bell should be rung before starting the morning and evening puja. It is believed that this increases the flow of positive energy in the house and keeps the environment pure. In the Puranas, the sound of the bell is considered a symbol of the primordial sound energy of creation, which removes mental unrest and negative thoughts.
When Not to Ring the Bell
According to Vastu Shastra and religious beliefs, it is not considered appropriate to ring the bell while leaving the temple. The bell is rung upon entry to invoke the deities, but doing so upon leaving can disrupt the peace and positivity gained during the puja. Therefore, after the puja, one should leave with a calm mind after offering respects to the deities.

Rules to Remember While Ringing the Bell
According to the scriptures, the bell should not be rung repeatedly or for a long time. Generally, 2 to 3 times is sufficient. When performing puja at home, the bell should be rung with the left hand. One should avoid ringing the bell loudly at night. Keep in mind that the sound of the bell should resonate for a few moments, creating positive vibrations.
