What does Ayurveda say about a healthy lifestyle?
What we commonly call a "routine" today is referred to as *Dinacharya* (daily regimen) in Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a science of living that explains how our body mirrors nature and should function in harmony with it. Here are some tips for a healthy lifestyle:
1. Waking up during *Brahma Muhurta*
According to Ayurveda, one should wake up at least 90 minutes before sunrise. This period, known as *Brahma Muhurta*, is considered a time filled with *Sattvic* (pure and harmonious) energy.
2. Oral cleansing
Oral cleansing is essential for eliminating *Ama* (toxins) from the body; this includes cleaning the tongue, oil pulling, and brushing the teeth.
3. Consuming lukewarm water
It is recommended to drink 1–2 glasses of lukewarm water after oral cleansing. For added benefits, you can mix in honey, lemon, or pieces of ginger.
4. Light exercise
Practicing yoga—specifically *Pranayama* (breathing exercises) and *Surya Namaskar* (Sun Salutation)—can prove beneficial in maintaining bodily flexibility and agility.
5. Body and hair oiling
Massage your body and hair with oil. Sesame oil is recommended for *Vata* dosha, coconut oil for *Pitta* dosha, and mustard oil for *Kapha* dosha.
6. Bathing routine
According to Ayurveda, one should bathe after massaging the body and hair with oil.
7. Nutritious Breakfast
Ayurveda suggests that breakfast should be rich in nutrients, warm, and easy to digest.
8. Lunch
According to Ayurveda, the ideal time for lunch is between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. This is when *Pitta* is at its peak.
9. Rest After Lunch
A brief nap after lunch is considered healthy in Ayurveda; however, individuals with a *Kapha* imbalance need to exercise caution.
