The thyroid needs to be at the right level during pregnancy because it helps in the mental and physical development of the child. If a woman has a thyroid problem during pregnancy, it can affect the health of her unborn child. The thyroid is a gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that control the body's metabolism. If these hormones are produced too much (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism), then many types of problems can occur in the body and this problem can also trouble the newborn. Which can affect his physical and mental development.

If a pregnant woman has a thyroid problem, it can affect the child, but if the disease is detected in the initial stage, it can be controlled to a great extent. If the thyroid is brought to the right level, then there can be no bad effect on the body of the newborn. Therefore, whenever women are pregnant, they should get a checkup done by their gynecologist every month. So that physical problems can be detected.
What is the effect on the child's health?
Dr Rakesh Kumar of the Pediatric Department at AIIMS New Delhi explains that if a woman's thyroid is enlarged during pregnancy, then thyroid hormone is necessary for the development of the child's brain in the womb. Its deficiency can affect the child's mental growth. If the thyroid is very low in a pregnant woman, that is, the amount of hypothyroidism is low, then the woman's chances of premature delivery increase. In such a situation, there are chances of premature delivery, which can affect the child's health.
Risk of miscarriage
Having a high thyroid can increase the risk of abortion (miscarriage). Because many types of changes occur in the mother's body during pregnancy, in such a situation, if the thyroid gland is enlarged, then the risk of miscarriage increases.
Thyroid problems in children
If the mother's thyroid level is not good, then the child may also have this problem. It is natural to have genetic problems later on. Especially if any disease starts in the mother during pregnancy, then it is sure to affect the child. Apart from this, in some cases, the child may lose weight due to thyroid problems.

How to keep thyroid under control?
If there is a thyroid problem during pregnancy, there is no need to panic. It can be controlled with timely examination and treatment. Get thyroid tests done regularly as per the doctor's advice.
