How was the temple built?
The foundation of the Dakshineshwar Temple was laid in the 19th century by Rani Rashmoni. It is believed that she wanted to go to Varanasi to worship Goddess Kali, but in a dream, the Goddess commanded her to build a grand temple on the banks of the Ganges. The queen purchased approximately 20 acres of land, and construction of the temple began in 1847. After eight years of hard work, the temple was inaugurated on May 31, 1855. More than one hundred thousand Brahmins were invited for the occasion.

What are the temple's features?
This temple is a fine example of the Navaratna style of Bengali architecture. The main temple is three stories high and topped by nine spires. The sanctum sanctorum houses Goddess Kali in the form of "Bhavatarini," standing on the chest of Lord Shiva. This idol is placed on a silver lotus with a thousand petals, further enhancing its grandeur.

Surrounding the temple are 12 smaller Shiva temples, each containing Shivalingas made of black stone. Additionally, there is a beautiful temple dedicated to Radha and Krishna within the temple complex.

Religious and Cultural Significance
This temple is not only a place of worship but also a center of spiritual practice. Saint Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa meditated here for 14 years. Places like Panchavati, Bakultala Ghat, and Nahabat Khana tell the story of his spiritual life.

Rani Rashmoni opened this temple to all religions and castes. This is why even today, people, regardless of their religion, come here to find peace and tranquility.
