Travel: The journey to Vaishno Devi is incomplete until you see this mysterious gate of Shivkhodi...

Often, when we plan a religious trip to Jammu and Kashmir, the name of Mata Vaishno Devi is the first thing that comes to mind. But did you know that just a short distance from Mata's court lies a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, without which your spiritual journey is considered incomplete? We are talking about Shivkhodi, also known as the "Cave of the Gods."

Shivkhodi: Where Shiva Still Resides
Located in the Reasi district of Jammu, this cave is nothing short of miraculous. "Khodi" means cave, and it is approximately 200 meters long. It is said that the shape of this cave resembles Lord Shiva's drum. The entrance to the cave is narrow, but as you move deeper, a spacious chamber opens up where Lord Shiva himself resides.

The Mythological Mystery of Bhasmasura
According to local beliefs and legends, when the demon Bhasmasura tried to consume Lord Shiva, Mahadev created this cave to protect himself. A fierce battle ensued between Mahadev and Bhasmasura. Ultimately, Lord Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, vanquished Bhasmasura. The figures carved inside the cave still bear witness to that era.

Miracles Inside the Cave
The most striking feature of Shivkhodi is the natural Shivalinga. This is not a man-made Shivalinga; instead, limewater drips from the cave's ceiling, creating a natural anointment. Furthermore, you can see figures like Sheshnag, Ganesha, and Kartikeya on the cave walls, making it seem as if the entire heavenly realm has been concentrated within.

The Path to Heaven?
Another profound mystery about this cave is that it contains numerous narrow passages. It is said that one of these paths leads directly to the Amarnath cave. However, these paths have now been closed for security reasons.

How to reach and when to go?
Shivkhodi is approximately 70-80 kilometers from Katra. After visiting Mata Vaishno Devi, you can reach here by taxi or bus. Although devotees visit here throughout the year, the view on Mahashivratri is truly extraordinary.
