It is often seen that people, carried away by emotions, hang the pictures of their ancestors anywhere. Sometimes in the living room, sometimes near the temple, or even in the kitchen. But as it is said…where rules are broken, the untoward happens… in the same way, according to the scriptures, putting the picture of ancestors in the wrong place can increase complications and problems in life. In such a situation, it is very important to have the right information about which direction and place the picture of ancestors should be put in the house.

Where to put the photo of ancestors
Mahant Swami Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya said that the photo of ancestors should always be put on the wall in the south direction. The south direction is called the direction of Yama, and that is why the place of ancestors is considered to be there. He clearly said that the picture of ancestors should neither be kept in the living room, i.e., drawing room, nor in the temple, nor in the bedroom or kitchen.
Show incense sticks in the picture daily.
For this, there should be a separate and secluded room in the house where only family members come and go. The same room should be clean, and the picture of the ancestors should be placed on the south wall. Swami ji says that photos should not be kept in the store room as well. Light incense sticks on the picture daily, offer sesame seeds and barley, and donate water on the new moon day of every month.
What is the method of worship?
During the days of Shraadh Paksha, i.e., Kanagat, the picture of the ancestors should be taken down from the wall and placed on a chair or table covered with a cloth. On that day, a tilak is applied on the picture and a garland is put on it, and tarpan is done by taking the gotra of the father, grandfather, and great grandfather as well as mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Swami ji told that at the time of Shraadh, not only are one's ancestors are remembered, but Tilanjali can also be given in the name of those who have no one behind them. Not only this, feeding fodder to the mother cow is also considered good for the peace of the soul of the ancestors.

Perform tarpan with a true heart
It is mentioned in the Puranas that Garuda Ji Maharaj also performed the shradh of his brother Sampati in the same way. Therefore, it is clearly written in the scriptures that the pictures of ancestors should be placed only for three generations and that too in the same room. It is said that where there is faith, there is peace… and this is the reason that tarpan done with a true heart for the ancestors brings happiness and prosperity to the family.
