The Jagannath Temple, located in the holy city of Puri in Odisha, is a center of devotion worldwide for its divine aura, centuries-old traditions, and unique beliefs. However, these beliefs include a rule that surprises many—unmarried couples are prohibited from entering. At first glance, this might seem like a social or moral rule, but its roots lie in an ancient legend, unknown to very few.

This belief is believed to be linked to Radha Rani.
The prohibition of unmarried couples from entering the temple is directly linked to Radha Rani. According to the story, Radha once arrived in Puri to have darshan of the Jagannath form of Lord Krishna. She was about to enter the temple with complete devotion when the priests present there stopped her.
Radha Rani was also stopped.
Radha was surprised. She asked the priests why she was not being allowed inside. The priests explained that only those in a marital relationship with Lord Krishna are permitted to enter the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Jagannath. Even the Lord's wives are not permitted inside, so Radha Rani's entry was against the rules.
Radha Ji gave a harsh curse.
Hearing this, Radha Rani became extremely distressed and angry. It is believed that with a heart filled with grief, she cursed right there that from now on, no unmarried couple would be allowed to enter the temple. It is said that any couple who attempts to break this ban will not find success in love.
This centuries-old tradition continues today.
The story of this curse has been told for generations, and for this reason, this rule is still strictly followed in the Jagannath Temple. The temple administration and priests observe this tradition with devotion and discipline. If any unmarried couple attempts to enter the temple, they are politely stopped.
