Constipation is a common occurrence during pregnancy, yet some women face significant discomfort due to it. This is primarily caused by hormonal changes and physical pressure on the body. In such cases, relief from this issue can often be found through simple home remedies.

During pregnancy, levels of the hormone progesterone rise in the body, which causes the intestinal muscles to relax. Consequently, the process of digesting food and eliminating waste takes longer than usual. Furthermore, the pressure exerted on the abdomen by the growing uterus also slows down intestinal motility. For some women, a low-fiber diet, insufficient water intake, or excessive consumption of caffeine (such as coffee and tea) can also contribute to constipation. In many instances, iron supplements prescribed by doctors can also exacerbate constipation.

Making dietary adjustments and ensuring adequate hydration can be highly beneficial. Aim to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water throughout the day. Avoid excessive consumption of tea or coffee, as these beverages can dehydrate the body and worsen constipation. Incorporate light, easily digestible foods into your diet—such as whole grains, lentils, green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, and fresh vegetables. Always consume your meals fresh and warm. Engaging in light exercise or taking short walks can also help stimulate intestinal movement.

Additionally, try to establish a regular schedule for using the restroom. It is advisable to attempt to use the toilet shortly after waking up in the morning or after meals. However, be sure to avoid straining or applying excessive internal pressure.

If home remedies do not provide relief, certain Ayurvedic remedies may prove helpful—such as Triphala powder or Avipattikar powder. Two grams of Triphala powder can be taken with warm water just before going to bed at night. Avipattikar powder can also be taken twice daily in a dosage of two grams. These remedies improve digestion and are effective in providing relief from constipation. If you experience severe pain during bowel movements, notice bleeding, or if the problem persists for a prolonged period, you should consult a doctor immediately. Sometimes, this can be a sign of a serious underlying condition.
