Problems such as irregular periods, hair loss, weight gain, mood swings, and sleep disturbances have become widespread. Addressing this topic, renowned Delhi-based doctor Sunita Chaudhary explained—in simple terms—what hormones are and what steps can be taken to keep them balanced.

**The Body Has Various Types of Hormones**
According to Dr. Sunita, our bodies contain approximately 50 types of hormones that work to maintain internal balance. In women, specific hormones such as LH, FSH, progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone play crucial roles. Estrogen regulates menstrual cycles, while testosterone influences body hair growth.
**Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance**
When hormones become unbalanced, the body exhibits several signs, such as irregular periods, weight gain, mood swings, excessive hair loss, the growth of unwanted facial or body hair, and sleep disturbances. The doctor notes that if periods do not occur for three consecutive months, it could be an indication of a hormonal disturbance.
**Focus on Diet and Lifestyle**
Dr. Sunita emphasizes that a proper diet and a healthy daily routine can go a long way in keeping hormones balanced. Consuming fresh, seasonal fruits is beneficial, whereas fruits that have been stored for long periods or contain chemicals can be harmful to the body.
She suggests that women should include whole grains, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, *chole* (garbanzo beans), *jowar* (sorghum), and various types of flours in their diet. These foods improve digestion and strengthen metabolism, which in turn positively affects hormonal health.
**Importance of Seeds and Healthy Fats**
To maintain hormonal balance, foods such as chia seeds, basil seeds (*sabja*), watermelon seeds, and dry fruits—including almonds, walnuts, and cashews—are considered beneficial. Additionally, *desi ghee* (clarified butter), yogurt, and fresh buttermilk are advantageous for the body.
Sleeping and waking up on time is crucial.
According to Dr. Sunita, using the phone late at night, consuming excessive caffeine, eating junk food, and going to bed late can disrupt hormonal balance. Sleeping on time and waking up early in the morning are essential for maintaining the body's equilibrium.
