The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India on Saturday for the Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma has been made the captain and Shubman Gill the vice-captain. Fast bowlers Jaspreet Bumrah and Mohammad Shami have been given a place in this tournament to be held from February 19. Star batsman Virat Kohli is also a part of the team. Now a statement has come from former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh on this. He has praised the 15-member squad while appreciating the decision of the selectors.
Yograj was happy with this decision of BCCI and selectors
India had to face defeat on the recent Australia tour. The hosts won the series by defeating Team India 1-3. Earlier, the Indian team had also lost in the Test series against New Zealand. Team India had to face criticism after consecutive defeats. During this time, experienced batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also came under the target of critics. His bat remained silent. However, now he has been included in the squad for the Champions Trophy to be played in Dubai. Yograj Singh has supported this decision of BCCI and selectors. He said - Support is needed when you fall down. If the mistake of dropping Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma was made, the whole team would have disintegrated.
During this, he narrated an old anecdote and said - When Sourav Ganguly became the captain in 2000, Team India was going through a phase of struggle. Veterans like Azharuddin were struggling with allegations like match fixing, but Sourav united Team India and created the spirit to win abroad as well. Many champion players were born in that era. However, in 2011, once again the team started struggling due to the exit of senior players.
What did Yograj say on the decision to make domestic cricket compulsory
Yograj Singh said that usually big changes are seen in the team after losing the series. No one can be bigger than the game. Be it Vivian Richards, Don Bradman or anyone else. He said that after returning from foreign tour, legends like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli should also play domestic cricket. This also gives confidence to young players. On the rule of making it compulsory to play domestic cricket, Yograj Singh said that this is the best decision of his cricketing life.
India-Pakistan included in one group
It is known that India had refused to send its team to Pakistan for this tournament, after which the ICC adopted the formula of hybrid model. Eight teams will participate in the Champions Trophy, which have been divided into two groups of four each. There will be 12 matches in the group stage, after which the semi-finals and the final match will be played. India and Pakistan are included in the same group and the match between the two will be played in Dubai on February 23. India will start its campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. After this, it will face Pakistan and then New Zealand on March 2. The final of the Champions Trophy will be played on March 9.
The Indian team for the Champions Trophy is as follows...
Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.
