Blood-related disorders are on the rise, causing alarm among the public. A campaign for thalassemia screening and bone marrow donor registration has been launched at the Sharda Care Athletic Camp in Greater Noida. Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of the Department of Hematology, explained that a permanent cure for several serious blood disorders is possible through bone marrow transplantation. The most critical factor for the success of this procedure is finding a suitable bone marrow donor. Such awareness and donor recruitment camps are organized with the aim of ensuring that patients in need can find a perfectly matched donor promptly.

**Freedom from Regular Blood Transfusions**
Dr. Singh noted that bone marrow transplantation proves effective not only for thalassemia but also for treating various genetic blood disorders, blood cancers, and certain non-cancerous blood conditions like PNH (Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria). However, thalassemia is the most common genetic disorder requiring bone marrow transplantation. It is a genetic condition where a child begins to require regular blood transfusions as early as six months of age. If a suitable bone marrow donor is found in time and the transplant is successful, the patient can achieve permanent relief.
Dr. Singh emphasized that for diseases like thalassemia, prevention is more important than treatment. If both parents are thalassemia carriers, prenatal testing can determine whether the fetus is affected by the disease. Prevention is possible through timely screening and appropriate medical advice; therefore, young people and newlywed couples should be aware of their carrier status.
**HLA Testing for Siblings**
According to Dr. Singh, for patients requiring a bone marrow transplant, HLA testing is first conducted on their siblings. HLA testing is used to determine which sibling is a perfect match for the patient. If a suitable donor is not found within the family, a search for a matching donor is conducted through volunteer donors registered in national and international registries. Donor registration drives are organized for this very purpose, where healthy young people voluntarily register themselves. They are contacted to proceed with the process only when their HLA matches that of a patient. Dr. Singh states that a higher number of registrations increases the likelihood of patients in need finding a life-saving donor.
**A New Lease of Life for Many Patients**
According to Dr. Singh, the camps focus on three key objectives. First, encouraging young people to determine their carrier status through thalassemia screening. Second, assisting families who already have a child suffering from a blood-related disorder in identifying potential donors through HLA testing. Third, registering healthy volunteers who could serve as bone marrow donors for patients in the future. Greater Noida is a major industrial and educational hub with a large population of working youth and students; therefore, thalassemia awareness and bone marrow donor registration campaigns hold special significance in this region. If more young people discover their carrier status and voluntarily register as donors, many patients could be given a new lease of life in the future.
