Special Toy Train services are set to launch for tourists visiting Darjeeling during Durga Puja. Starting October 1, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway will operate special trains on various short routes. These include the steam-hauled 'Red Panda' and the diesel-powered 'Muktadhara'.
A special Toy Train ride in Darjeeling: Tourists visiting Darjeeling during Durga Puja will get to experience a special Toy Train ride amidst the mountains. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway will commence these special excursion services from October 1.
Train service between Darjeeling and Ghum: Four one-way special excursions will run between Darjeeling and Ghum. These trains will be powered by diesel engines, with a proposed one-way fare of ₹800.
Journey from Kurseong to Mahanadi: Two round-trip special services will operate between Kurseong and Mahanadi. On this route, tourists will have the opportunity to witness the mountains, forests, and the heritage of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Steam-hauled 'Red Panda' train: One service between Kurseong and Mahanadi will be operated by a steam engine. The proposed fare for the 'Red Panda' train is ₹1,530.
'Muktadhara' train service: The second round-trip service between Kurseong and Mahanadi will be the 'Muktadhara'. This diesel-powered train will have a proposed fare of ₹1,030 per passenger.
'Muktadhara' linked to Tagore: The name 'Muktadhara' is a tribute to Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. His famous poem 'Muktadhara' is believed to be inspired by the natural beauty of this region.
A unique experience of heritage and mountains: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through these special services, tourists will be able to enjoy the Toy Train, vintage steam engines, and scenic mountain landscapes.
