Chaitra Navratri and Kharmas: Chaitra Navratri is an extremely sacred festival in Hinduism. Kharmas has already commenced, preceding the Hindu New Year. It is believed that during this period, the movement of the Sun slows down; consequently, people refrain from undertaking auspicious activities such as weddings or *Griha Pravesh* (housewarming ceremonies). In light of this, a question often arises in people's minds: Is it appropriate to worship Goddess Durga during the period of Kharmas? Let us explore the specific guidelines that should be observed during this time.

Kharmas and Chaitra Navratri

Kharmas is a period during which auspicious ceremonies—such as weddings, *Mundan* (first haircut) ceremonies, *Griha Pravesh*, and *Upanayan* (sacred thread) ceremonies—are prohibited. However, regarding the worship of *Shakti* (Divine Power)—specifically the rituals and prayers associated with Navratri—this rule differs slightly. Since Navratri is dedicated to the adoration of Goddess Shakti, performing worship, chanting, penance, and observing religious fasts during this time is considered highly auspicious and spiritually fruitful. Navratri is, in itself, an immensely powerful and highly auspicious period upon which Kharmas exerts no negative influence whatsoever. On the contrary, acts of worship, mantra chanting, penance, and charity performed during this time are considered to yield even more auspicious results.

Things to Strictly Avoid

Even though Navratri is underway, one should refrain from starting a new business or purchasing any major property during Kharmas.
It is advised not to finalize dates for engagements or weddings during this period; such matters should be postponed until Kharmas concludes.
During this time, one must strictly abstain from consuming onions, garlic, and meat.
Under no circumstances—even inadvertently—should one insult anyone during this period, as it is believed that doing so may displease Goddess Durga.

How to Perform *Ghatasthapana*?

Since Chaitra Navratri falls right in the middle of Kharmas this year, the significance of the *Shubh Muhurat* (auspicious timing) becomes even greater. Establishing the Kalash during the Abhijit Muhurat is considered the most auspicious act.
If you wish to eliminate any negative effects associated with Kharmas, offer prayers to Lord Ganesha before commencing the main worship.
Subsequently, offer Arghya to the Sun God.
It is believed that observing these rituals renders the worship even more auspicious and fruitful.
