Chhath Puja Dishes: Chhath Puja is a sacred and traditional festival of India, dedicated to the worship of the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. This grand festival is celebrated with great devotion and reverence, especially in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and by the Indian diaspora across the country. This four-day festival is associated with important rituals such as Nahay-Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, and Usha Arghya.

The most sacred part of Chhath Puja is the sattvik and traditional dishes prepared during the ceremony, which are offered to Chhathi Maiya. Here, we will tell you about some of these dishes that are mandatory to prepare during Chhath Puja. Let us explore the significance of these five traditional dishes prepared during Chhath Puja.

Thekua

The most prominent and beloved offering of Chhath Puja is thekua. It is made from wheat flour, jaggery or sugar, ghee, and cardamom powder. Thekua is shaped using a special wooden mold and then fried in ghee or oil. After offering this prasad to the Sun God, it is distributed among fasting women and family members.

Rasiya Kheer

This traditional kheer made from jaggery and rice is offered to Chhathi Maiya during the Arghya ceremony. Jaggery and pure ghee are used instead of milk, giving it a very sattvic and aromatic taste. Rasiya Kheer is specially prepared on the second day of Chhath Puja, i.e., Kharna.

Kasar

Kasar or Kasar Laddoo are made by roasting gram flour (besan) in pure ghee and adding jaggery. They are delicious, nutritious, and full of energy. Kasar is distributed as prasad and is believed to be very dear to Chhathi Maiya.

Poori and Chana Dal

On Saptami, fasting women eat puri and chana dal. These are also prepared as prasad. Puri is made from wheat flour and fried in pure ghee. Chana dal is cooked with mild spices to ensure a sattvic meal.

Kaddu Bhaat

Chhath festival begins with Nahay-Khaay, a ritual of preparing pumpkin curry and rice. In Bihar, pumpkin is called gourd. Pumpkin is cooked with rock salt and turmeric. This prasad is consumed by the devotees with purity after bathing, marking the beginning of the entire fast.
