The mere mention of *Mulethi* (licorice) brings to mind relief for a sore throat and cough. It has long been used as a household remedy; many people make it a habit to pop a small piece into their mouths or drink licorice tea when suffering from a throat ailment. It is also used to address certain digestive issues. Consequently, many people start consuming it daily, believing it to be beneficial.

However, anything is beneficial only when consumed in the right quantity and manner. Licorice is no exception. Consuming it for prolonged periods or in excessive amounts can have adverse effects on the body. Individuals with pre-existing conditions related to blood pressure, kidneys, or the heart need to exercise particular caution.
**Issues with Sodium and Water Retention**
Dr. Rajkumar (AYUSH) explains that licorice contains an active compound called glycyrrhizin. While this compound is responsible for its beneficial properties, it can also cause problems if consumed in excess. Continuous consumption of large amounts can lead to sodium and water retention in the body, which may cause blood pressure levels to rise in some individuals.
**Physical Discomfort**
Additionally, excessive consumption of licorice carries the risk of lowering potassium levels in the body. Potassium is a vital mineral, and a deficiency can lead to weakness, fatigue, muscle problems, or general physical discomfort. In some cases, it may also cause swelling in the legs or other parts of the body, as well as headaches. Therefore, one should not start consuming licorice daily simply because it is a natural product.
**Exercising Caution with Licorice Consumption**
People often assume that Ayurvedic or natural products do not cause harm, but this is not necessarily true. Being natural does not mean it can be consumed daily without regard for quantity. People with high blood pressure, in particular, should exercise greater caution regarding the consumption of mulethi (licorice). If one is already taking medication for blood pressure, it is advisable to consult a doctor before consuming mulethi regularly.
Similarly, individuals with kidney or heart-related conditions should not consume it for extended periods on their own initiative. Mulethi can also interact differently with certain medications. Therefore, if someone is on regular medication and wishes to include mulethi in their daily diet, it is prudent to consult a doctor or a qualified healthcare professional.
