How to Make Lamp Wicks: Lamps are lit during the worship of deities, symbolizing positive energy. These lamps are fueled by either ghee or oil. If the wick is not prepared correctly, the lamp will not burn properly; it may extinguish prematurely, or the flame may lack brightness and vigor. A poorly made wick can also cause a black soot ring to form inside the lamp. If the lamp goes out during worship, it is considered inauspicious. Therefore, the wick must be crafted with great care to ensure it burns correctly.

Two Types of Lamp Wicks
There are two types of lamp wicks: the round wick, primarily used for ghee lamps, and the long wick, used for oil lamps.

Method for Making a Round Wick
Round wicks are made for ghee lamps. To make one, use raw cotton thread or natural cotton wool; avoid using synthetic cotton. Take a small amount of cotton in your hand and roll it into a ball. Shape the top center into a pointed tip and apply a little camphor powder or raw milk to the tip to make it sharp. Then, soak the wick in cow's ghee. When lit during worship, the flame will burn brightly and last for a long time. Remember to replenish the ghee periodically.

How to Make a Long Wick?
If you wish to make a wick for an oil lamp, it needs to be long so that it can be fully immersed in the oil and burn steadily against the edge of the lamp for an extended period.

To make a long wick, take a small amount of cotton and shape it into a long form, tapering both ends to a fine point. While doing this, ensure you do not press or roll it too tightly. If the wick is too tight, the oil will not be able to travel up to the flame, potentially causing the wick to extinguish midway. You can apply camphor powder to the end of the wick that is to be lit, so it catches fire easily.

Do this before lighting:
Before lighting the lamp, soak the clay lamp in water for a while, then take it out and let it dry. Similarly, soak the wick in oil; this ensures the wick is thoroughly saturated. When you light the lamp, it will burn brightly and beautifully.
