Children's Cough Home Remedies: Last week, several children died in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consuming cough syrup. Following these incidents, the Ministry of Health issued an alert, advising that cough medicine be administered with caution. In fact, most children's coughs and colds resolve on their own, requiring no medication. Parents may be wondering how to properly care for their children's coughs. Fear not, as we will share nine effective and easy home remedies that will help with children's coughs and reduce their reliance on medication.
If your child has a cough, take care of them like this:

Keep Hydrated -
Always provide children with plenty of water and warm soup. Warm lemonade, caffeine-free tea, or light soup can help soothe a sore throat and loosen mucus. Fluids also strengthen children's immunity.
Use a Humidifier -
Dry air can worsen a child's cough. Placing a cool-mist humidifier in their room can moisten the throat and soothe a cough.
Hot Water Steam Inhalation
Exposing children to hot water steam. This helps loosen mucus and soothe them before bed.
Saline & Suction
Nasal congestion can aggravate coughs. Have children blow their noses frequently or use a saline nasal spray. For younger children, mucus can be cleared using a suction bulb.
Using Honey (Above 1 Year)
A teaspoon of honey soothes children's throats and reduces coughs. It is only safe for children over 1 year of age.
Gargling with Warm Salt Water
Gargling is effective for sore throats and reducing mucus. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and have children gargle. This remedy is safe for children over 6–7 years of age.
Keep the head elevated while sleeping (over 2 years old)
Propping the head up on extra pillows while sleeping can reduce coughing. This helps with coughs caused by post-nasal drip.
Adequate Sleep and Rest
Children must get adequate rest and sleep. Sleep boosts the body's immune system and promotes faster cough recovery.
When to Consult a Doctor
If a cough persists for more than two weeks or is accompanied by high fever or difficulty breathing, consult a pediatrician immediately. Sometimes, a cough can be a sign of a serious illness.

The Ministry of Health's advisory and home remedies indicate that using cough syrup for children's coughs can always be risky. Parents should exercise caution in caring for their children, using as many natural remedies as possible, and administering medication only after consulting a doctor if necessary. These simple home remedies are not only helpful in reducing cough, but also help in keeping the bodies of children hydrated and healthy.
