The Cyber Cell is constantly working to crack down on cybercriminals; however, these criminals continue to devise new tactics to defraud people online. They employ various methods, such as hacking WhatsApp accounts or sending deceptive links to trick individuals. Additionally, they carry out fraudulent activities using fake websites. Now, a new modus operandi has emerged, creating fresh trouble for the public.

**Fraud via Calls Using the Name 'Gudiya'**
Recently, several incidents involving a new tactic used by cybercriminals have come to light. In these cases, criminals deceive people by making phone calls and addressing them as "Gudiya." "Gudiya" is a common nickname used in many households, which the criminals exploit.
The scam typically unfolds like this: the cyber fraudster calls and addresses the victim as "Gudiya," claiming to be a close acquaintance of a relative who supposedly provided the victim's number. They claim to be facing an issue with their own phone and ask to send money to the victim's account, requesting that the victim transfer it back to them later. This ruse is used to lure the victim. To build trust, they actually transfer money to the victim's account, making the caller appear legitimate. Once trust is established, the actual scam begins; when the time comes to "return" the money, they engage in fraudulent activities, such as asking for bank account details or OTPs.
Furthermore, they attempt to hack the victim's phone. They may also hack WhatsApp accounts to message people on the contact list, sharing bank account details and soliciting money under the guise of an emergency—a trap into which many people fall.
**How to Stay Safe**
First and foremost, exercise caution if you receive a call from an unknown number. Try to avoid answering such calls altogether. If you do answer and the caller mentions any financial transaction, recognize it as a potential cyber scam and disconnect the call immediately. If someone calls claiming to be a relative, make sure to verify this with the relative in question. If you realize the caller is a cyber fraudster, block the number immediately.
