These days, most parts of the country—including the capital, Delhi-NCR—are witnessing cases of seasonal fever, the common cold, and swine flu. During this rainy season, health experts have also been warning people about mosquito-borne diseases. Between July and October, hospitals typically see an influx of patients suffering from mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria.

Doctors note that it is not easy to distinguish between dengue and a common viral fever in the early stages. Symptoms such as high fever, headache, body aches, weakness, and occasional vomiting can occur in both conditions. Consequently, many people mistake dengue for a common fever and simply wait it out at home.
However, dengue can sometimes become severe, so it is important to remain vigilant. Let us look at the warning signs that should prompt an immediate visit to the doctor.
**Dengue and the Associated Risks**
Dengue is a disease spread by the bite of an infected *Aedes* mosquito. These mosquitoes are most active during the day. Stagnant, clean water left behind after rains creates an ideal breeding ground for them. That is why doctors advise maintaining cleanliness around the home and preventing water stagnation during the rainy season.
Doctors state that dengue often begins with a sudden, high fever.
Accompanying symptoms may include headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and a red rash on the body.
Some individuals may also experience extreme fatigue. However, one cannot confirm it is dengue based on symptoms alone.
Viral fevers and other infectious diseases can present similar symptoms. Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor if one has a high fever or suspects dengue.
**Severe Abdominal Pain Accompanied by Fever**
Dengue can cause abdominal pain in addition to fever and body aches. In severe cases, leakage from the body's small blood vessels can occur. This can disrupt the body's balance and lead to a critical condition. Therefore, if a dengue patient experiences severe abdominal pain, heightened pain upon pressing the abdomen, or persistent restlessness, they should contact a doctor immediately instead of waiting at home.
**Rapid Breathing**
If a patient with a fever is breathing much faster than normal or experiencing difficulty breathing, this requires serious attention. In severe cases of dengue, complications such as impaired blood circulation can occur, leading to breathing difficulties. Rapid breathing is considered one of the warning signs of severe dengue.
**Be Alert to Bleeding from the Nose or Gums**
Severe cases of dengue can lead to bleeding issues. Bleeding from the nose or gums, or the presence of blood in vomit or stool, are signs that should not be ignored.
If you have dengue or a high fever and begin to experience bleeding from the nose or during bowel movements, it is crucial to contact a doctor immediately. Excessive bleeding associated with severe dengue can be life-threatening.

**What Precautions Should Be Taken for Dengue?**
Doctors state that there is no specific medication that directly eliminates the dengue virus. Treatment focuses primarily on managing symptoms, maintaining adequate hydration, and minimizing the risk of bleeding. Paracetamol may be administered for fever and pain, as advised by a doctor. Medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
