Do not do these 5 things on Aja Ekadashi, even by mistake; it could lead to inauspicious consequences..

In Hinduism, the *Ekadashi* tithi (lunar day) is considered extremely significant for the worship of Lord Vishnu. *Ekadashi* occurs twice a month—once during the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) and once during the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase). The *Ekadashi* falling in the *Krishna Paksha* of the *Bhadrapada* month is known as *Aja Ekadashi*. According to religious belief, observing a fast and worshipping Lord Vishnu with proper rituals on this day frees a person from sins and ensures happiness and peace in life.

Acts of worship, chanting mantras, and charity hold special importance on *Aja Ekadashi*. Conversely, it is advised to avoid certain activities on this day; it is believed that improper conduct during the fast can diminish the spiritual benefits of the worship. Therefore, if you intend to observe the *Aja Ekadashi* fast, do keep these rules in mind.

Why should one not eat rice on *Aja Ekadashi*?

Consuming rice is considered forbidden during the *Ekadashi* fast. According to religious belief, eating rice on this day can lead to negative consequences. For this reason, those observing the fast abstain from rice and rice-based food products. During the fast, one may consume fruits, milk, or other *Sattvic* (pure) foods, depending on one's capacity and health. Those observing *Nirjala* (waterless) or other rigorous fasts should also pay attention to their physical condition.

Do not pluck Tulsi leaves.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) holds special significance in the worship of Lord Vishnu. There is a religious tradition of following specific rules regarding Tulsi on *Aja Ekadashi*. It is believed that Mother Tulsi herself observes a fast on this day; therefore, Tulsi leaves should not be plucked. If Tulsi leaves are required for worship, they can be plucked a day in advance. Many traditions also advise against watering the Tulsi plant on this day.

Stay away from *Tamasic* food

*Ekadashi* is considered a day of *Sattvikta* (purity) and restraint. Therefore, one should not consume non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onions, garlic, or other *Tamasic* substances on this day. It is customary for those observing the fast to consume light and *Sattvic* food. According to religious beliefs, a *Sattvic* diet helps calm the mind and maintain focus during worship and prayers.

**Avoid anger, backbiting, and criticism**

On the day of Aja Ekadashi, it is advised to exercise restraint not only in diet but also in behavior. Quarreling, getting angry, lying, backbiting, or criticizing others is considered inappropriate during the fast. On this day, one should strive to keep the mind calm, chant the name of Lord Vishnu, and spend time in religious activities. It is believed that the purpose of the fast is not merely to abstain from food but also to maintain a positive state of mind and thought.

**Avoid staying up late and bad company**

On Ekadashi, one should try to maintain a disciplined daily routine. It is considered best to avoid spending time on unnecessary late-night activities, harboring negative thoughts, or keeping bad company. Meditating on Lord Vishnu, reading religious scriptures, and participating in *bhajan-kirtan* (devotional singing) on this day are considered auspicious.
