Sitting on the doorframe—or *chaukhat*—of the house is one such practice for which our elders would immediately correct us. But have you ever wondered what the actual reason was behind that stern tone of our grandmothers? Is it merely a superstition, or does a deeper spiritual and mythological significance lie hidden behind it? Let us explore this in detail from the perspectives of religion and astrology.

**The Doorframe: More Than Just a Wooden Structure**
Astrologer Chandresh Sharma of *Astropatri* shared some crucial insights on this subject. He explained that the doorframe of our home is not merely an ordinary structure made of brick, stone, or wood. In Hinduism, it is revered as a sacred boundary—a symbol of the home's sanctity, security, and positive energy. It serves as the *Lakshman Rekha* (a protective boundary) that separates the negativity of the outside world from the sacred and serene atmosphere within our home.

**An Obstacle to the Arrival of Goddess Lakshmi**
Mr. Chandresh Sharma explains that, according to the principles of astrology and *Vastu Shastra*, the Goddess of happiness, prosperity, and wealth—Mother Lakshmi—enters the home exclusively through the main entrance. Consequently, if a person sits on the threshold of the house, they inadvertently obstruct the path of Goddess Lakshmi as she attempts to enter. This can have an adverse effect on the financial prosperity of the household.

Furthermore, from an astrological standpoint, sitting or standing on the doorframe for prolonged periods can activate the malefic effects of the shadow planet 'Rahu' in one's horoscope. This can lead to unnecessary mental stress and sudden, unexpected troubles in life.

**The Mystery Linked to Lord Narasimha**
A powerful mythological legend is also associated with this specific rule. According to the *Vishnu Purana*, Lord Vishnu assumed the 'Narasimha Avatar' (the half-man, half-lion incarnation) in order to slay the demon Hiranyakashipu. In accordance with the boon he had received, Hiranyakashipu was slain neither inside the house nor outside; rather, Lord Hari placed him upon His thighs on the 'threshold' and killed him there. For this very reason, the threshold is regarded as a symbol of a 'transitional phase' (Sandhi Kaal). It is a space where intensely potent energy resides; consequently, sitting on it is prohibited according to the scriptures.
