Durga Ashtami 2026: The auspicious festival of Durga Ashtami falls on the eighth day (Ashtami Tithi) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) during the month of Chaitra. This year, Durga Ashtami—occurring during Chaitra Navratri—falls on Thursday, March 26. On this day, devotees worship Goddess Mahagauri. In many regions, *Kanya Puja* (the worship of young girls) is also performed on Durga Ashtami. While a fast is traditionally observed for the entire nine days of Navratri, many people do not fast for the full duration; instead, they choose to observe the fast and perform worship specifically on *Pratipada* (the first day) and Durga Ashtami. Durga Ashtami is also known as *Mahashtami*. Why is Goddess Mahagauri worshipped on Durga Ashtami? What are the benefits associated with observing the Durga Ashtami fast?

Why is Goddess Mahagauri Worshipped on Durga Ashtami?
During the nine days of Navratri, devotees worship the nine distinct forms (*Swaroops*) of Goddess Durga. Among these nine forms, the eighth manifestation is that of Goddess Mahagauri. The nine days—spanning from *Pratipada* to *Navami*—are dedicated, in chronological order, to the nine forms of Durga (*Navadurga*). Based on this tradition, Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped specifically on Durga Ashtami (or *Mahashtami*). According to mythological legend, Goddess Parvati undertook rigorous penance for thousands of years to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to this arduous vow, her body became extremely frail and darkened in complexion. When Lord Shiva was pleased with her devotion, he bestowed upon Goddess Parvati an exceptionally fair complexion, thereby earning her the name 'Mahagauri.'
Mahagauri is a four-armed Goddess; for this reason, she is also referred to as the 'Chaturbhuj Devi' (the Four-Armed Goddess). Mahagauri is clad in pristine white garments. Her mount is Nandi—the bull. She holds a trident in her hands.
Seated upon a bull, Mother Mahagauri is the four-armed Goddess adorned in white attire. She wields a trident. Her radiant white complexion and garments symbolize peace and purity.
