EPFO FAQs: Is PF money lost if there is no nominee? Find out who is entitled to it after death and what the rules are..

Have you ever wondered what happens to the money in a person's PF account if they pass away while still employed? If not, let us explain the EPFO's provisions for such a scenario.

**Will the PF money be lost?**
If an employee passes away during their service, the EPFO advises the heirs to claim the funds within three years; otherwise, the account becomes 'inoperative.' To avoid losing out on interest, it is best to claim the PF money within this three-year window. Therefore, the EPFO strongly advises all employees to add a nominee to their PF accounts.

**Will the money be lost if there is no nominee?**
The direct answer is no. Even if an employee dies without having added a nominee to their account, their PF and insurance-related benefits do not lapse. The funds remain completely secure and are disbursed to eligible family members or legal heirs in accordance with the rules. However, the absence of a nominee does make the entire process significantly longer and more complex.

**Who receives the money if there is no nominee?**
According to EPFO rules, in the absence of a nominee, all eligible family members or legal heirs of the deceased member can file a claim. The following documents may be required for this purpose:

Death certificate of the deceased
Aadhaar card of the deceased and the claimant
PAN card of the claimant
Bank details of the claimant
Family details and passport-sized photographs

**Who is considered 'family' according to the EPFO?**
If the deceased is male, the eligible family includes his wife, children (married or unmarried), parents, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren (children of his son). However, if the deceased is a woman, the persons included would be her husband, her husband's parents, children (married or unmarried), parents, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren (children of the son).
