Why is Haritalika Teej celebrated?

Pandit Yadavendra Shukla (Shastri ji) said that this time Hartalika Teej is falling on 26 August on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha Bhadrapada. Explaining the importance of this fast, Pandit ji said that according to mythology, Mother Parvati observed this fast to get Lord Shankar. While telling the story, Pandit ji said that since childhood, Mother Parvati had accepted Lord Shiva as her husband and resolved to marry him, but Himalaya Raj fixed her marriage with Lord Vishnu. Parvati ji became very upset after knowing this.

Unable to share her pain with anyone, she left home with the help of her friend and went to the forest. There she started intense penance to get Lord Shiva. Parvati ji endured the hardships of severe cold, heat, and rain during the penance and gave up food and water. Pleased with her unwavering faith and rigorous penance, Lord Shiva appeared and accepted her as his better half.

Can girls observe Haritalika Teej?

It is usually seen that the fast of Hartalika Teej is observed by married women, but Pandit ji told that this fast can be observed by married women and unmarried girls as well. Married women observe this fast to get a long life for their husbands, while girls observe this fast to get a good groom.

Haritalika Teej fast is considered one of the most difficult fasts, because on this day, women do not even consume water. Since it is a Nirjala fast, not everyone can follow it. Therefore, women who are going to observe this fast for the first time should be mentally and physically prepared in advance. The fast begins before sunrise. Women take a bath, wear clean clothes, and worship Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati, and Shri Ganesh. At the time of worship, the idols are duly worshipped with water, flowers, incense, lamps, sandalwood, Akshat, fruits, and sweets.

On this day, women observe a Nirjala fast, that is, no liquid, including water, is consumed.
Chanting the mantras of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati during the fast is considered auspicious.
The fast is broken the next day after worshiping after sunrise.

Before Parana, food is offered to God, then women consume water and fruits.

Feeding Brahmins and giving Dakshina at the time of Parana is considered extremely auspicious.

During this fast, women should avoid bad thoughts, anger, and impure deeds. Pandit ji said that purity is given more importance in this fast.
