The festival of Hartalika Teej holds special significance for women. On this day, married women worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, praying for the happiness and prosperity of their married lives. In many families, there is a tradition for daughters to visit their maternal homes or for special gifts to be sent from there; consequently, the joy of visiting one's maternal home for Teej is truly unique. The childhood home, meals cooked by one's mother, festive preparations with family, and the joy of performing rituals amidst loved ones make this journey emotionally special.

However, traveling during the festive season can be slightly more challenging than usual. Trains and buses become crowded, securing tickets can be difficult, and those traveling by road may face traffic congestion. Additionally, one must attend to various details such as fasting, preparing for the puja, and packing luggage.
If you are planning to visit your maternal home for Hartalika Teej, a little planning can make your journey comfortable and hassle-free. Let us look at some essential tips that can ensure your trip goes smoothly.
1. Book travel tickets in advance
Passenger numbers on trains and buses surge during festivals. If you haven't booked your tickets yet, try to confirm your seat as soon as possible.
If traveling by train, keep checking your ticket status periodically. Also, keep alternative travel arrangements—such as a bus or other modes of transport—ready just in case. Waiting until the last minute could disrupt your travel plans.
2. Account for crowds and traffic when setting out
Railway stations, bus terminals, and major roads tend to be more crowded than usual during the festive season. Therefore, it is best to leave home well in advance.
If your train or bus is scheduled for early morning, arrange for a cab, auto-rickshaw, or private vehicle to reach the station beforehand. Leaving late could lead to traffic and crowds, adding to your stress.
3. Pay special attention to fasting and travel
On Hartalika Teej, many women observe a *Nirjala* (waterless) fast or other types of fasts. If you have to travel on the day of the fast itself, plan your journey keeping your health and travel convenience in mind.
You might experience weakness, dizziness, or fatigue during a long journey. Therefore, if possible, schedule your travel for either before the fast begins or after the puja. It is advisable to consult a doctor if you have any health issues or specific medical conditions.
4. Pack puja and Teej essentials in advance
In the excitement of visiting your parents' home, it is easy to forget essential items at the last minute. So, create a quick checklist a day before you travel.
Keep items related to the puja—such as *mehndi* (henna), bangles, your saree or suit, jewelry, and other personal belongings—separate from your regular clothes. If the puja preparations are to take place at your parents' home, discuss with your family beforehand what items you need to carry with you.
5. Wear comfortable clothes for the journey
While wearing a beautiful saree or a heavy suit might be important for the festival, it is better to prioritize comfort during the journey. Wear light, comfortable clothes for the trip and pack your festive outfit separately for the puja.
Instead of wearing heavy jewelry and carrying valuables on your person during the journey, it is better to pack them safely in your bag. This will make the trip easier and more comfortable.
6. Keep a small bag for essentials
Make sure to carry a small handbag with you during long or crowded journeys. You can keep your mobile phone, charger, power bank, essential medicines, ID proof, tickets, and some cash in it.
Keeping essentials with you—rather than in a large bag—makes them easily accessible when needed. Also, pay special attention to your mobile battery and travel documents.
7. Inform your family about your travel details
Before leaving for your parents' home, be sure to inform your family about the train or bus details and your travel timings. If someone is coming to pick you up from the station or bus terminal, coordinate with them in advance. Keep your family updated about any changes or delays along the way. Sharing details of your journey with your family is a good idea, especially if you are traveling alone.
