In today's era, due to career, financial independence, and personal preferences, many women prefer to start a family after crossing the age of 30, but as age increases, especially after 35 years, the path to becoming a mother becomes a bit difficult. Doctors say that at this age, there is a high possibility of disturbances in the chromosomes of the embryo. However, the advancement of medical science has made this challenge easier to a great extent. A recent study has shown that a technique called Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A) can become a new ray of hope for older women.

What is the PGT-A test?

When a woman tries to become a mother through IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), the embryo is prepared in the lab. Through the PGT-A test, those embryos are examined to find out if there is any abnormality in the chromosomes.

Chromosome disorders often lead to miscarriage or a failed pregnancy. In such a situation, if the doctor chooses the right embryo in advance, then the chances of pregnancy increase significantly.

Research on women aged 35 to 42 years

Researchers at King's College London conducted an important test on women aged 35 to 42 years. This was the first randomized controlled trial of its kind, in which 100 women were included.

These women were divided into two groups:

In the first group, the PGT-A test was done on embryos made from IVF.

In the second group, embryos were transferred without any testing.

What were the results?
The study revealed that the live birth rate was higher in women who underwent the PGT-A test.

This rate was 72% in the PGT-A group.

Whereas, only 52% of the women in the normal group were able to successfully give birth to a child.

Also, women who used PGT-A had to undergo embryo transfer less frequently, and the time to pregnancy also decreased. This means that this process not only increases the chances of success but also relieves women from long waits.

Why is this study special?

Until now, such concrete evidence was not available on women trying to become mothers at an older age. This pilot study fills that gap and indicates that the PGT-A technique can be very helpful in increasing the success of IVF in older women.

However, the researchers also believe that to strengthen these results, it is necessary to study on a large scale and at different centers.
