We often wake up drenched in sweat after a workout or gym session, but sometimes, due to laziness or lack of time, we delay bathing. If you do this, be careful.

Dr. Bhavook Dhir, a skin specialist at PSRI Hospital in Delhi, says that sweating is a natural process, but if you let it remain on your body for a long time, it can be very harmful to your skin. Let's find out how.
Why is it important to shower immediately after a workout?
Sweating after a workout is a normal process, but delaying a shower for a long time can be harmful to the skin. Sweat contains salt, toxins, and bacteria, which can accumulate on the skin's surface and block pores. This prevents the skin from breathing properly and can lead to irritation, itching, and rashes, especially in those with sensitive skin.
Delaying bathing gives bacteria and fungi a chance to thrive. After a workout, the body remains warm and moist, creating an ideal environment for bacterial and fungal infections. This can increase the risk of back acne, fungal infections, jock itch, and itching in skin folds. For those who already have pimples or acne, this can worsen the condition.
Sweat drying alone won't do the trick.
After sweat dries, a layer of salt forms on the skin, leaving it dry and rough. This layer also damages the skin's natural oils, weakening the skin barrier. If this continues for a long time, the skin may appear dull and signs of premature aging may appear.

The 'Golden Rule' for Protecting Skin from Infections
Taking a warm shower immediately or within 20–30 minutes after a workout is considered beneficial for the skin. This washes away sweat, dirt, and bacteria, leaving the skin feeling fresh. While bathing, one should use a mild cleanser and afterward, it is important to apply moisturizer, so that the skin remains moisturized and any kind of irritation or infection can be prevented.
