Hot parathas, desi ghee laddoos, halwa, wedding and party celebrations with a variety of dishes and sweets, and a relaxed routine become common during winter. This is where digestive problems begin. There's a misconception that since it's winter, you can eat and drink as much as you want and have hearty meals, but remember, this is only possible if your intestines are healthy. It's the best season to enjoy food and drinks, but some precautions are necessary. Let's learn more about this from Dr. Naresh Bansal (Vice Chairperson, Gastroenterology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi).

What causes digestive problems?
In cold weather, metabolism slows down. This is due to the body trying to maintain its temperature. This can disrupt digestion.
In winter, thirst decreases, and drinking less water leads to digestive problems.
Eating hot and heavy meals also disrupts the digestive process.
Seasonal affective disorder in winter also affects digestion.
How beneficial is drinking hot water?
Avoid using very hot water in winter. It can harm digestion. If you are having hot water instead of tea, that's fine, but don't consume it continuously. Use normal lukewarm water.
Why do the elderly face more problems?
There is a solid reason why the elderly have more difficulty digesting food during this season. If proper care is not taken, they may also suffer from constipation. A major reason for this is that their intestines weaken with age. Their muscles are relatively weaker. Due to weak teeth, they have difficulty chewing. This makes fiber consumption difficult. Diabetes and nerve problems also weaken the intestines. It would be best if they remain active, avoid heavy meals, and consume easily digestible food.
Keep these things in mind:
Eat dinner two and a half hours before going to bed. This will help you avoid bloating and indigestion. Eat your food slowly and chew it properly. Do not eat in a hurry.
Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine, i.e., tea and coffee, during winter.
Alcohol disrupts digestion.
Regular exercise and yoga improve digestion and overall health.
