Fifty years ago, if someone had asked anyone if there would be such a thing in this world that people sitting in America would be able to tell people in India with pictures what they are doing, would the answer have been yes? Probably not. But this became possible because of what we call social media. You must have heard a lot of disadvantages of social media till now. Eye problems due to screen time or problems related to mental health. But do you know that social media (social media eating disorder) is also affecting our eating habits? Reports say that social media is also one of the reasons for eating disorders. How are we going to understand this in a while?
This habit can become dangerous.
There is no doubt that social media (social media eating disorder) gives you a chance to join a community, but there may be some people among them whose thoughts about food and body image are not correct. Such people can share dangerous habits, which can make you think that all this is normal. Apart from this, such images are often seen on social media (social media eating disorder), which are either edited or posed in a particular way. All these promote such body image, which is not healthy and these things can create mental pressure in you.
Especially children or teenagers who have just opened up to the world and have extra pressure to look good. Not only this, but many influencers promote such products which are for weight loss. And seeing the marketing of these products, people feel that this is the right way, whereas many times these are not healthy.
What are the other disadvantages (social media eating disorder)
1. Fast food and junk food
When we see pictures or videos of fast food and junk food on social media (social media eating disorder), we also feel like eating them. 1. Pressure to look smart and fit
We often see fitness influencers, food bloggers, and YouTubers on social media showing their perfect bodies and healthy diets. Seeing their pictures, we feel that we should also adopt the same diet and habits to look like them. To look better than others, we make our diet strict without any professional advice, like eating very less or start following a diet (social media eating disorder) which is not healthy. This also harms our health badly.
2. Pressure to look smart and fit
We often see fitness influencers, food bloggers, and YouTubers on social media (social media eating disorder) showing off their perfect bodies and healthy diets. Seeing their pictures, we feel that we should also adopt the same diet and habits to look like them and in order to look better than others, we make our diet strict without any professional advice, like eating very little or start following a diet (social media eating disorder) which is not healthy. This also harms our health badly.
3. Food reviews and ads (social media eating disorder)
Where there are people, there will be a market. Where there is a market, there will be advertisements. Gone are the days when advertisements were only a part of TV or newspapers. Now when millions of people are on social media, advertisements will of course be there. Food industry advertisements are also similar on social media.
How to control social media eating disorder
1. Break from social media
If you feel that you are spending too much time on the screen, then it is important to take a break. You can set a timer or remind yourself that there are other activities apart from screens that can be beneficial for you.
2. Do not make decisions by comparison
Learn to love yourself instead of thinking about your life or body by looking at others. It is indeed important to be fit or healthy, but not by looking at others. You always have to remember that what is shown on social media (social media eating disorder) is not always true.
3. Choose whom to follow
Fill your feed on social media with content that is right for you. Follow accounts with healthy recipes, fitness tips, and positive content. This will lead you towards a better lifestyle.
4. Choose exercise over screen time
When you stay away from social media (social media eating disorder), engage yourself in outdoor activities. Be it a walk, exercise, or playing a sport. All these are beneficial not only for physical health but also for your mental health.
